South Australia: Free Plants, Rebates and Garden Freebies

Who: City of Adelaide residents and property owners.

Trees and plants: Up to $100 towards established trees or indigenous plants for your property.

Green walls and rooftop gardens: 50% rebate (up to $5,000) for green walls or rooftop gardens.

Water tanks: Up to $5,000 for rainwater tanks.

Who: City of Burnside landholders.

How: Apply online for a Native Tree Voucher between 18 May and 30 September 2026, then redeem it by 1 November 2026 at Adelaide Advanced Trees, Cherry Gardens. Each voucher is worth up to $75.

Who: Burnside residents.

How: Register on the Burnside Biodiversity site and order plants for collection in May and June. The 2026 giveaway sold out, and it returns in 2027.

Who: Port Adelaide Enfield residents. Registration is essential.

How: Register through council for the annual tree giveaway; the next event is in June 2027. If you would rather choose your own, buy a tree that will reach at least 3 metres, plant it and claim up to $100 in total for up to 2 trees per property.

Who: Charles Sturt residential property owners.

How: Buy and plant a tree on your property, keep the tax invoice, then apply online. Council rebates 50 per cent of the purchase price up to $100 a tree, for up to three trees per residential property. One application per property per financial year.

Who: Marion residents.

What's covered: Soil, mulch, native plants and waterwise lawn for your verge.

How: Submit a Section 221 verge development application before starting work. Once approved, complete the verge improvements and apply for your 50% rebate (up to $500).

Who: Holdfast Bay households and businesses.

How: Buy indigenous plants from council's Native Species List and claim 50% back, up to $40. You can claim one Green Living Rebate per financial year, on one item, while funds last. A rainwater tank rebate (50% up to $150) is on the same list.

Who: Onkaparinga residents.

How: Buy subsidised home composting systems through council. Rebates for greener verges and significant tree retention are also open. Water and energy rebates, including rainwater tanks, have closed because their funding is fully spent.

Who: West Torrens property owners and ratepayers.

How: Install a rainwater tank of at least 1,000 litres and apply through council. The rebate rises with tank capacity, and there is an extra amount when the tank is plumbed into the house.
