April across Australia
April is peak autumn planting across Australia. The heat has broken, soil temperatures are ideal for root vegetables and brassicas, and the cooler weather means less water stress on new seedlings. This is one of the most productive planting months in the gardening calendar. Leafy greens, root crops, peas, broad beans, and herbs all go in now.

April Gardening Tips
This is the last good window for garlic planting in cooler regions (Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra). In warmer regions (SEQ, Darwin, North QLD), garlic can go in through May.
Transplant brassica seedlings (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale) that were started in trays in February or March. Space them generously and protect from cabbage moth with fine mesh or netting.
Sow broad beans directly into the ground. They fix nitrogen in the soil, improving it for the next crop. No need to start in trays. Push beans 5cm deep and 20cm apart.
