June across Australia
June is the first month of winter. Growth slows significantly in cooler regions as temperatures drop and daylight hours shorten. Focus on maintaining what is already in the ground rather than starting many new crops. In subtropical and tropical regions, June is excellent planting weather with mild days, cool nights, and low pest pressure. Leafy greens, root crops, and herbs continue to thrive.

June Gardening Tips
Protect frost-sensitive plants with frost cloth or cloches overnight. Remove covers during the day to allow light and airflow. Young seedlings are most vulnerable in their first few weeks.
This is a good time to improve soil. Spread compost, aged manure, and organic matter over empty beds. Worms and soil organisms will work it in over winter, building fertility for spring planting.
Harvest winter greens (kale, silverbeet, spinach, lettuce) regularly by picking outer leaves. This encourages continued growth through the cold months and extends the harvest season.
